Mars has always fascinated people. Its red, fiery appearance is mysterious and intriguing. Many believed in the existence of an ancient race of Martians that appeared in numerous sci-fi stories. However with new data coming from space probes, a growing number of scientists now believe that life on Mars is quite likely. It is a relatively small planet, with about half the diameter of Earth. Its surface would be a harsh place for humans, but it is more like the surface of Earth than that of any other planet. Mars has polar ice caps that contain frozen water and carbon dioxide. The planet??™s two moons, Phobos and Deimos, were named after the dogs of the Roman god Mars.
